Meet the team
Peter de Been
Pete is 5th degree Black Belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. He was one of the first non Brasilians to gain a Black Belt out of Brasil.
Pete is the founder (established in 1994) and President of the Australian Federation of Brasilian Jiu Jitsu - AFBJJ. The AFBJJ is the representative of the International Brasilian Jiu Jitsu Federation - IBJJF. The AFBJJ overseas around 40 competitions Australia wide and co runs the the Australian National and Pan Pacific with the IBJJF.
Pete competed in 7 Pan American Championships and 6 World Championships. He also competed in two International Super fights - in the second in Sao Paulo, he also collected a special prize purse for the fastest submission of the night!
Director & Coach
Greg has come from a military background having served in both the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Regular Army combined for 25 years.
He has traveled extensively around the world and has deployed operationally to Iraq, Afghanistan and Fiji.
Greg started his BJJ journey in 2008 and due to being in the military, has trained in and gained experienced from many different clubs throughout Australia.
Greg received his black belt from Peter de Been in October 2019 two weeks prior to the Pan Pacific Championships for which he had registered to compete in as a brown belt. When Greg asked Pete why he did this, Pete simply told him that it was time and that he had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Administration and reception
Donna was employed for over 16 years in the Royal Australian Navy where she met Greg. Donna retired from the Navy and worked in administration for Defence following her husband around Australia.
Donna is the brainchild behind de Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Wodonga as she saw the passion of the sport in her husband and came up with the concept of opening an Academy.
Although Donna hasn't trained in BJJ she has been involved in the sport by way of supporting Greg when he has competed. Donna is the brains behind the de Been Wodonga Academy and a friendly face when you come to train.
Coach - Adults
Carlos is a Brown Belt Jiujiteiro who hails from the Philippines where he started his journey in BJJ. He has been training for over 10 years and is extremely technical on the mat.
An active competitor with numerous local and international titles including a Silver medal at the biggest and most prestigious BJJ competition in Australia, the 2016 IBJJF Pan Pacific Jiu Jitsu Championship.
Besides competing, coaching and teaching, BJJ has always been his passion. He aims to share his knowledge and make BJJ grow in the region.
Blue Belt Syllabus
Originally involved in Karate, Shane transitioned to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu due to the passing of his coach. Not knowing what BJJ was he brought his son Jack into the de Been Wodonga Academy for a trial. Having seen how unique and progressive this style of martial was he decided to start his own journey.
Shane is a strong competitor in the Blue Belt Masters four division and has medalled on many occasions. He has even competed on the world stage at the World Masters Championships.
Shane has a unique coaching style that will help any new member with their endeavours.
